Treatment Choices
We provide each patient with the services of an experienced licensed nurse, registered dialysis, social worker, and all other disciplines coordinated by the Medical Director of U.S. Renal Care Home Therapies, the nephrologist, and the primary physician of the patient.
STAFF ASSISTED HOME HEMODIALYSIS
You will learn to perform hemodialysis treatments at home, in most cases with a dialysis partner. Hemodialysis cleans and filters the blood, ridding the body of harmful wastes, extra salt and fluids. The process helps control blood pressure and maintains proper electrolyte balance. An access will allow blood to flow from your body to the dialyzer, so it can filter waste and remove extra fluid from your body.
TRADITIONAL
Performed three times per week, typically for about three to four hours per treatment.
SHORT DAILY
Performed five or six times a week, typically for two to two-and-one-half hours per session. Involves two-hour sessions six times a week.
NOCTURNAL
Treatments are performed while you sleep, typically six to eight hours a night, three or more nights a week.
PERITONEAL DIALYSIS
A small, flexible catheter is used to fill up your abdominal cavity with a warmed, specially prepared fluid called dialysate (dialysis solution). The dialysate stays in your abdomen for several hours and absorbs wastes and excess fluid from your blood. You then drain it out and replace it with fresh dialysate. Four to five fill-and-drain exchanges are done per day. To reduce the number of daytime exchanges, some people can use an assist machine (called a cycler) to do exchanges, usually while they sleep at night.
