A Dialysis Education Program
STAY ACTIVE...
STAY HEALTHY...
LIVE WELL...
When you are first diagnosed with kidney disease,
it can be hard to know what to do next. The focus of Dialysis
Corporation of America (DCA) is to provide quality clinical
care and enhance the quality of life for people with chronic
kidney disease.
Research shows that well informed patients
feel better, stay active and keep their kidneys working longer.
Understanding the changes in your health and how they affect
your life will help you take better care of yourself, and
make informed decisions about your healthcare. Even with kidney
disease, you can live an active and productive life.
Kidney disease is increasing by 5% to 6% per
year. By the end of the year 2010, this disease will affect
nearly 600,000 people.
Most commonly recognized through blood testing
and urine testing, kidney disease is usually silent. Disease
or injury damages the kidneys, diminishing their important
functions and causing these negative effects:
- Waste and fluid buildup in the blood
- Increased blood pressure
- Anemia (below-normal red blood cell
count)
- Weakening of the bones
When the disease becomes severe, treatment
becomes necessary to replace some of the functions of a healthy
kidney.
Renal Choices
DCA recognizes that people have jobs, families,
social activities and everyday errands, so we take the extra
step with every individual to focus on your specific needs.
Knowing about your kidneys and putting this knowledge to work
can help you maintain your health. Our Renal Choices program
will help you and your family understand what changes you
may experience with chronic kidney disease and dialysis. In
the Renal Choices class you can expect to learn the following:
- How the kidneys work
- What anemia is
- What type of diet is appropriate
- Types of medications required
- What an access is and how to care
for one
- How to monitor fluid status
- Treatment options - hemodialysis,
peritoneal dialysis, transplant
The class will be offered locally to you and
your family at one of DCA's dialysis facilities. The class
will be offered on a regular schedule during day or evening
hours. Information will be given to each participant to take
home for future reference.
